Moveable Feast - My Top 10 Favorite Revolving Restaurants
76
We've all, at one time or another when our ego has stretched a bit too far, been put in our places when told we're getting just a bit too big for our britches, or "hey, the whole world doesn't revolve around you." True enough, for sure, but if we play our cards right, we can make ourselves revolve around the world.
The following are a few of this planets' best restaurants that will actually take you for a spin while you chow down. Of course, the food is so good, you may actually find yourself getting a bit too big for your own britches.......literally.
Top of The Ritz: Cape Town, South Africa
Resting securely between the mighty Atlantic Ocean and soaring Table Mountain is Cape Town's only rotating restaurant. Here you'll be able to experience authentic South African fare. Start your evening off with green shell mussels, move on to a main course of filet of ostrich, and end the meal with a delicious Crêpe Suzette or flaming cherries jubilee. In between bites from your perch atop the beautiful Ritz Hotel, the rotation will afford you views of the city of Cape Town, Robben Island, Green and Sea Points and, eventually, the enticing waters of the Atlantic.
Summit Restaurant: Sydney, Australia
47 floors up breathtaking views await at Sydney's Summit Restaurant. The loungy ambiance is super cool with lots of reds and pinks, but rest assured, the food is always served super hot. Begin your meal with any number of seafood starters from seared scallops to pacific oysters, and then move on to your choice of fish, beef or chicken entrées served with sumptuous sides that include red chili and ginger broccoli and double cream and butter smashed spuds. This delicious down-under dinner will leave your tummy completely content for days.
Perlan Restaurant: Reykjavik, Iceland
Speaking of cool restaurants, if you're ever in Reykjavik don't miss Perlan. This restaurant is especially good if you have a fear of heights, as it sits only 5 stories up. An unusual spot to say the least, this glass-domed, hemispherical edifice was added, in the early 1990's, to the existing structure consisting of several hot water storage tanks built above a geothermal spring. The revolution is a gradual one; it takes 2 hours to make the full circle, but even from only the 5th floor the views of the city, coastline and nearby mountains are stunning. The food is prepared by master chefs and delivered to your table by tuxedoed waiters. You can't go wrong with their specialty of lamb or fresh fish and be sure and top off your meal with a delicious dessert like their blackberry sherbet with poached blueberries. Sweet! If you visit in autumn, and are not epicuriously challenged, you can try their wild game buffet which includes puffin, wild goose and reindeer. Personally, I'll have to pass.
360 Restaurant: Toronto, Canada
360 Restaurant, located at the CN Tower, offers not only a fine dining experience with spectacular views of the city of Toronto, but also boasts the worlds highest wine cellar.
There's lots of variety in the menu, so whether you're passionate about beef, fish or pork, you'll find something yummy for your tummy. If you leave the table without having the spiced pumpkin cheese cake with white chocolate cranberry ice cream (served in the winter months only) all I can say is shame on you!
Cloud 9 Restaurant: Vancouver, British Columbia
Perched high upon the 42nd floor of the Empire Landmark Hotel is the Cloud 9 Restaurant and Lounge. 20 foot high windows afford a magnificent view of the city of Vancouver as well as the harbour, nearby mountains and the Strait of Georgia. Evening dining will allow you to enjoy a night sky effect given off by fiber optic lighting set into the ceiling as well as the illusion of dining al fresco by virtue of an enormous indoor mural of the constellations. The award winning menu focuses on regional specialties and includes starters of fabulous lobster bisque, or my favorite, sweet French onion soup, a main course of fresh seafood, beef or rack of lamb and an oh-so-tempting treat of tiramisu. Bon appétit.
Drehrestaurant Allalin: Saas-Fee, Switzerland
High above the clouds is where you'll be if you dine at Drehrestaurant Allalin. This restaurant, at 11,000 feet above sea level, is the worlds highest revolving eatery. Even more interesting than that is the fact that it's actually situated atop a glacier. Your view......the magnificent Swiss Alps....., and, on a clear day, you can even see Milan, Italy......it doesn't get much better than that! Your fare......Swiss-German favorites like veal sausage and goulash, but there are also lots of beef, chicken, pork and pasta options.
Restaurant 181: Munich, Germany
This highly acclaimed eatery, recently awarded a Michelin star, is situated inside the Olympic Tower in Olympic Park, the highest structure in the city, offering a birds eye view of Munich, the Bavarian Alps and, of course, the Olympic Stadium, located directly below. They present an eight-course tasting menu as well as several à la carte dishes that would leave your head spinning even if the restaurant wasn't.
Restaurant Näsinneula: Tampere, Finland
Located in the charming town of Tampere, north of Helsinki, is the best Finland has to offer by way of fine dining. From just over 400 feet in the sky, you'll have panoramic views of the city, nearby lake Näsijärvi and beautiful forests. If you dare, you can try a reindeer fillet with buckthorn berry sauce or a luscious bee-sting pudding with cloudberries (whatever these may be.)
Top of the World: Las Vegas
Closer to home, mine at least, you'll find sin cities Top of the World at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. From high above Las Vegas Blvd. you'll thrill at the sight of millions of shimmering lights on the Las Vegas Strip. You'll also enjoy appetizers of smoked Scottish salmon and fried calamari, and main courses of sumptuous beef, chicken, lamb, seafood and pork dishes. For fun, you might want to try to their turf and quack; a delightful filet and duck combination. Finish up with a masterful crème brûlée or a lighthearted cheesecake lollipop. And while you're dining, don't be surprised if you see folks launch themselves past your window, as right above and all around you are several exhilarating thrill rides, none of which I recommend, for your sake as well as that of the people on the ground, following dinner.
SkyJump has guests plummeting down more than 100 floors. Insanity, a colossal mechanical arm, extends you out 64 feet and up 900, then twirls you at speeds of up to three 'G's. X-Scream will shoot you over the edge of the hotel where you'll land, suspended, high above the strip before being whipped back up. This process will repeat again (and again) until you've screamed yourself mute and cried yourself silly. Lastly, there's Big Shot, which will catapult you 1000+ feet into the atmosphere and back down again. This one will have you screaming at the top of your lungs and then sobbing like a little girl. If you can keep your eyes open during any of these adventures, you'll have a great view of the city, however, if you get nauseous just reading about the rides, I suggest you enjoy that view from inside the building.
SkyCity: Seattle, Washington
Want a jaw-dropping view of Puget Sound or snow-shrouded Mount Rainier? Dining at the Space Needle's SkyCity Restaurant will get you just that! And the food? Fresh and fabulous! Try their short ribs with a twice baked potato or the lamb shank with grilled asparagus. And don't even think about leaving without tasting the lunar orbiter, a classic dessert that's been on the menu since 1962.

Wow! I have never heard of any of these restaurants. My favorite one is the 360 Restaurant in Toronto, Canada because of the spectacular view and the spiced pumpkin cheesecake and ice cream. I love all of your photos. They're gorgeous!
